In February 2013 I had the brief opportunity to work and stay at Aljezur’s Amazigh Hostel in southern Portugal. While it’s been some while since my last visit I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell you a little about this superb hostel.
Located in Aljezur, Portugal Amazigh is in the heart of the Algarve, the alluring, southernmost region of mainland Portugal. While Aljezur isn’t on the coast it’s only a six mile drive away, or bike ride for the more adventurous, to the nearest beach, Praia da Arrifana.
For surfers there couldn’t be a better hostel to stay in particularly during the off season as Amazigh is one of the few hostels in the area that remains open. And for beginners if you decide you’d like to take lessons Ricardo Costa, owner of Aljezur Experience, a local surfing school will take you to one of the nearby beach for anywhere from 35€ to 225€ depending on the season and duration of your lesson. After a long day on the beach surfing, sunbathing, or otherwise you can retire back to the hostel or one of the
many villas. Amazigh offers dorm style rooms with beds in a room with an occupancy of six to ten people or a private room that up to four friends can occupy. Or if your coming for an extended stay the owners also have villas located in Vale Figueiras and Arrifana respectively.
While staying and working at the hostel I was received kindly by fellow travelers and employees alike. During my short stay I was given a private room on one of the upper levels of the hostel, wifi As one of the few volunteers working there at the time I can tell you quite confidently
that the rooms were cleaned on a regular basis. While the lack of a washer or dryer was rather unfortunate particularly for a long term stay such as my own I became quite efficient at using a washboard to clean my clothing during my time there. Otherwise all of the amenities offered at Amazigh Hostel were above average: a fully stocked kitchen and cooking area with the option of purchasing home cooked meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, private bathroom equiped with towels in every room, wifi throughout the hostel, bike rentals, surf lessons, plasma TV, and more.
All in all, Amazigh Hostel is a great place to stay if your looking for a home based for a few weeks.
